Contest
This Side of West has been holding annual writing contests in October since 2021. We’re excited to be back with another one!
From October 1st to October 31st, 2025, we’re accepting submissions in any writing genre. Visual art and genre-mixing are welcome—and encouraged.
The catch? Your entire submission must fit on one page (US Letter size). Be playful, bold, experimental—whatever one page can hold.
The winner will recieve…
- $100.00 CAD
- Publication in Issue 24
The runner-up will recieve…
- $50.00 CAD
- Publication in Issue 24
All submissions must be in a .docx file. Other formats will be rejected.
Contest Rules
- Open from October 1–31, 2025.
- Free to enter.
- Only current UVic undergraduate students may submit.
- Minimum 100 words; maximum is whatever fits on one page.
- One submission per person.
- Email submissions to thissideofwest@gmail.com with the subject line:
ONE PAGE CONTEST: “[TITLE]” by [FULL NAME].- i.e. “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway
- To withdraw, reply to your original submission email and let us know.

Still have a question?
We will announce the winners of the contest at our Editorial Anthology Launch. We will email the winners after our announcement. The authors who did not win will not be notified.
We will pay the winners in cash.
